For parents and guardians

Bringing your child to see us.

If your child finds the dentist hard, or has a medical condition that makes routine care difficult, you do not have to manage it alone.

Parents can self-refer

Book directly with the clinic.

No GP referral letter is needed for either private clinic. For care at Great Ormond Street, we advise that your GP or dentist make the referral.

What to expect

Calm, careful, and unrushed.

  • Longer appointments, no rushing.

Most appointments are 45 to 60 minutes. We do not rush a child to fit a slot.

  • Acclimatisation visits when needed.

A visit can be just about sitting in the chair, meeting Kunal, and seeing the room.

  • Sensory adaptations.

Lights, sound, weighted blankets, ear defenders. Familiar items welcome.

  • Inhalation sedation & GA pathway.

Where treatment cannot be safely completed using routine methods, we discuss conscious sedation (via gas and air or via intravenous sedation) or general anaesthesia together.

What families say

In the words of parents who have brought their children in.

Every quote below is from a family seen at one of Dr Kunal's clinic locations.

  • Dr Kunal was absolutely outstanding. I couldn't recommend him more as a paediatric dentist. He was warm, kind and excellent at his job. Thank you!
  • Booked my son in to see paediatric consultant Dr Kunal to have an extra tooth removed. Being only 5 I was aware this experience could impact future visits to the dentist if it didn't go well. Dr Kunal and the team were amazing! My son was totally at ease and you could even say he enjoyed the experience. It was such a relief.
  • Kunal sees my 5 year old for check ups. He is gentle and kind which makes appointments easier for her. One word from Kunal and she complies with his advice — and wants to be a dentist like him.
  • I booked my children in for a check up with Dr Kunal Patel on the recommendation and I was blown away by the service and care he and the team provided. My children have always struggled in the chair but Kunal's calming nature got them onside quicker than any other dentist we've tried.
  • Dr Kunal Patel and his team were absolutely exceptional. They went above and beyond to make my son feel comfortable and safe, explaining everything in a friendly, gentle way that kept him engaged and curious rather than nervous. The team truly took the time to connect with him, which made all the difference.
  • I was extremely impressed by the care and patience Dr Kunal Patel and his team shared with my son who had to have an extraction. He had a wonderful calming presence and the steps they went to to make my son comfortable did not go unnoticed.
Common questions

Things parents often ask.

What ages do you see?

From the first tooth, around six months, up to 16 years. Older patients are happily referred on to trusted colleagues.

Will my child need to be sedated?

Most children gain confidence with acclimatisation. Where treatment cannot be safely completed using routine methods, we discuss conscious sedation (via gas and air or via a vein) or general anaesthesia together.

Can I stay in the room?

We discuss this on an individual basis. Older children sometimes prefer to come in alone; we facilitate a joint decision.

Do I need a referral letter from my GP or dentist?

Not for either private clinic — you can book directly with Fulham Road Dental or Direct Dental Balham. For care at Great Ormond Street, your GP or dentist will need to refer.
